In the 1950 eruption, which lasted for 23 days, Mauna Loa released 1,000 cubic meters (1,307 cubic yards) of lava per second. In contrast, Kilauea released 300 cubic meters (392 cubic yards) per second in 2018. It last erupted in 1984 when lava flowed down its eastern flank only to stop 4.5 miles (7.2 kilometers) short of Hilo, the Big Island’s most populous town. The current alert level is “advisory” meaning the volcano is showing signs of unrest yet there’s no indication an eruption is likely or certain. During a 1950 eruption, the mountain’s lava traveled 15 miles (24 kilometers) to the ocean in less than three hours.

It offers an easily accessible, 0.7 mile, hike to the Keanakākoʻi Crater, and also has two overlook points that provide panoramic views of Halemaʻumaʻu Crater and Mauna Loa. From there you can pick up the loop trail (the recommended route is counterclockwise— to your right) for a 4 mile round-trip trek. It’s the only hotel located inside this Hawaii national park, and there is plenty of signage, so you won’t get lost finding this volcano hotel. Between May 2018 and October 2018, the hotel and the Kīlauea summit area of the national park were closed to the public due to volcanic explosions and earthquakes. The historic Volcano House hotel has hosted a cadre of world dignitaries since the original building was opened in 1846.

Chalet Kilauea is only five minutes away from Hawaii Volcanoes Nation Park too! But there’s a nice lobby downstairs where you can sit and enjoy the view. They also offer in-room dining, which is perfect for after a day of exploring the park or when you want to eat breakfast in your room before starting the day. There was a separate, cozy bathroom with a shower stall.

You can find larger maps of the complete park area and the island at the maps section of the national park website. The Kīlauea volcano, the most active volcano in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and is seen by millions of tourists each year. This makes it the most visited attraction in Hawaiʻi and the most visited volcano in the world.

Early visitors

If you’re looking for Hawaii Volcanoes National Park souvenirs, you’ll definitely want to stop at Hawaii Volcano Lodge. That’s the main perk of staying at Volcano House versus staying at other Volcano Village lodging. The Volcano House hotel offers guests the opportunity to stay within the park and surround themselves in nature. Enjoy lighter fare, an afternoon snack or late night treat.

Historic Location

This is where President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Amelia Earheart stayed. Two of the most famous guests who stayed here include Mark Twain and Robert Louis Stevenson. Keep scrolling to learn more about this Hawaii Volcanoes National Park hotel! It’s definitely one of the most unique hotels on the Big Island of Hawaii. Imagine dining overlooking the Halema’uma’u Crate as it settles from the latest eruption.

Seeing lava in the park

You do not feel like you are stuffed in a tiny room like some lodges. The Hawai'i Volcanoes Lodge Company manages the hotel and gift shop. Volcano House is the Big Island of Hawaii's oldest hotel site and the only hotel/lodge within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Gourmet Dining

There is complimentary Wi-Fi (perfect for uploading those amazing volcano photos), and it’s one of the few hotels in Hawaii to have a heater. Since it’s a historic hotel, there were only a couple of electrical outlets. And you’ll need to use the windows instead of the air conditioning. The location can’t be beat either – there are trails right outside your door, and you won’t have to drive anywhere if you want to go hiking or visit other parts of the park.

Viewing the lava flow includes a visit to Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island. Kauai Island is approximately 500 miles north of the Big Island and is upwind of the volcanic plume. The eruption is in its traditional location and only effects those who have chosen to live at the coast in the eastern foot of the mountain. Decadent Dinner MenuStuffed Big Island chicken, Volcano House pasta, and Hilo Coffee-rubbed lamb are just a few of the amazing dinner choices at the Rim. With fresh ingredients sourced right on the Big Island, the Rim is the perfect destination for a quiet, romantic evening or a satisfying family meal after a long day of adventure. With a population of less than 75,000, Kauaʻi is truly a small-town island, littered with open space, protected preserves, and old plantation history.

The cabins sleep 4 (1 double bed and 2 bunk-style twin beds). Each cabin has a picnic table, an outdoor barbecue grill and an outdoor firepit. Hawai'i Volcanoes Lodge Company also operates rustic camper cabins and the campsites at the Nāmakanipaio Campground. Seasonal campers can opt to commune in nature, under the stars, by spending their time at Volcano House in either the campsite or cabins.

General admission is  $30.00 per private non-commercial vehicle or $15.00 for pedestrians or bicyclists. Keep the receipt, because it will allow you seven days entrance to the National Park. Conditions for lava viewing (e.g., lava flowing into the ocean, accessibility of the lava flow) are ever changing. Please see our lava viewing guide for Hawaii for up-to-date information on where and how to see lava. Children up to 12 years old can become junior rangers and receive a junior ranger badge.

We stayed in room 11 on the second floor of Volcano House. The room has a king size bed, comfortable leather couch, and side table/coffee table. It is hard to believe that you are waking up overlooking an active volcano that was erupting less than a year ago. You can wake up to native birds, and the sounds of the park.

Large & Tall House Plants 1000's In Stock

big house plants

They love bright, indirect sunlight (at least six hours a day) and require constant misting during the spring and summer months. This slow grower reaches up to eight feet in height, but it takes some time. Keep your plant in bright, indirect light for the best growth. The long, banana-shaped leaves won’t fall as readily as those of its cousins either. Just place it in bright, indirect light, and watch it grow up to 10 feet tall.

Dracaena Marginata (Dragon Tree)

At maturity, the Euphorbia cactus can reach up to 6 ft. (1.8 m) in height. Norfolk Island pines are also popular Christmas trees that continue growing long after the festive season has passed. Additionally, regular dusting or cleaning of the leaves is important to keep them free from dust, which can hinder photosynthesis.

How to Save a Dying Houseplant: A Beginner's Guide

The Rubber Plant is very easy going, rarely drops leaves (unless overwatered) and will put up with lower light areas. No wonder its popularity has continued over such a long period. It might be worth being cautious if you struggle to keep simple houseplants alive like a Snake Plant or Parlor Palm. Opt for young plants on this list so you gain experience without the risk of getting it wrong and wasting your money.

Costa Farms Pachira Money Tree

To be totally honest, they’re a little fussy, but don’t write them off. The arching fronds are as elegant as any palm and while they like a lot of water, they don’t need direct light. Perfect if your windows are already crowded with all those sun-hungry species (or is that just me?). But even if you reside somewhere with good insulation and HVAC, an areca palm is a good option if you want a palm with elegantly weeping, strappy fronds. It thrives in extremely low light and will still reach up to eight feet tall.

It's also okay to feed your houseplants a liquid houseplant fertilizer at half strength once a month during the growing season, from spring to fall. The snake plant is a popular indoor plant with large leaves because it is easy to take care of. The plant consists of stiff, upward-facing leaves shaped like swords. They range in color, but common varieties have a dark green center and a yellow or white border. One of the most beloved indoor plants with big leaves is the bird of paradise.

Your Complete Guide to Indoor Plant Maintenance

big house plants

This evergreen tree or shrub can be grown indoors in pots for a shorter period of time as it can grow quite big. Just make sure that it gets 5-6 hours of sunlight for proper growth and height. How nice is it to have a plant in the house that is low maintenance and looks beautiful at the same time? Also called the finger plant, this tall skinny houseplant has big leaves shaped similar to maple leaves. The popular houseplant has shiny, dark-green leaves that have a leathery texture.

The intricate veining and lively color combinations, mostly in shades of pink, red, or green, make it perfect for a small space that needs some brightening. Hi, I’m Andrew, and Smart Garden Guide is my website all about indoor gardening and houseplants. I'm here to share my experience and help you have more success and enjoyment growing plants. Dieffenbachia grows well in low light or dappled shade during the spring and summer and likes to be watered regularly. Make sure to minimize exposure to cold temperatures and drafts to prevent leaf drop.

It’s best to keep this one out of the reach of pets and small children. Olea europaea loves lots of sunlight therefore, the plant is unlikely to flower indoors. Just like many other Dracaenas, this indoor plant is sensitive to fluoride (causes leaf discouration) so use distilled or non-fluorinated water.

You can hang lights and ornaments from their branches without worrying how fast they'll wither. They can thrive for years in your home and rarely reach five feet in height. Great for displaying on the patio, porch or indoor garden, alocasia dawns have large heart-shaped leaves.

Fishtail palms can tolerate different soil types ranging from loamy, sandy, clay, acidic as well as alkaline. Feed your plant with a diluted liquid fertilizer every two weeks during spring and summer to keep it healthy. Its leaves are large, stiff, and perfect for making a bold statement and accentuating any setting. Since this plant is used to being protected by a tree canopy it doesn’t like too much sun and can tolerate many rooms as a result. The African Mask plant is actually a native of the Philippines and was named due to the large leaves resembling that of an African mask.

They often come with three braided stems, and they’re always topped with glossy, large, feather-shaped leaves. Just remember that if that breeze is coming from your HVAC system you might want to run a humidifier in the room. Also, give them partial sunlight but protect them from the hot afternoon sun. If you’re hoping to bring a forest vibe into your space, invite this lady into your abode. Each individual leaf can be up to six feet long – that’s a lot of drama packed into one houseplant.

Wish I lived in Dayton so I could come here more often. Well maybe not because I'd probably weigh 100 pounds more. If I owned a restaurant, I'd want it to be like this. Many hold some various record, some were used in movies, and a few have rare operational, functioning equipment. All of them have a following of hard-working volunteers that keep them going.

Did you know that there are currently twenty-five different museum submarines in the United States that you can get in and explore? Most are decommissioned, retired submarines, saved from being scrapped after being deemed as unfit for further military service to the Navy. Many of them saw action during World War II or played a role in the Cold War and/or Vietnam. Some were used for training, experimenting, or research for the development of today's submarine force.

Nineteen are still in the water while six (Albacore, Batfish, Cavalla, Drum, Marlin, and U-505) are secured on dry land. It is truely an amazing experience to tour any submarine museum! Also, there is more to the submarine museums than just submarines. Many have exhibits of torpedoes, mines, and ships (targets) to see while you're there. This site also has a forum that I hope you'll take part in. The forum is here for visitors to ask questions and learn about the different submarines.

The November following the Tate/LaBianca murders, police responded to a possible lead at this address, where they found their potential witness dead from "suicide." Eventually the world would learn about the Manson Family, a cult in thrall to a man named Charles Manson, living together at the remote and abandoned Spahn movie ranch deep in the Valley. Below we've mapped all those and more important locations in the history of the cult that changed Los Angeles forever. We depend on ad revenue to craft and curate stories about the world’s hidden wonders.

The house at Cieldo Drive was demolished in the 1990s; the new house on the property has a different house number and is owned by Full House creator Jeff Franklin. Dennis Wilson got involved with the Manson Family when he picked up two Family girls hitchhiking by the side of the road; he brought them to his Rustic Canyon house, they hung out, everyone left. He returned home late that night to find Charles Manson in his house with about a dozen, mostly female guests. Manson and the guests stayed for a few months, at a cost of $100,000 to Wilson.

This list contains all preserved submarines and submersibles on display, including submarine museum boats, that currently exist as complete boats or as significant structural sections. Detailed addresses for the parks/museums can be found by looking at the official website for the submarine or by checking out the forum here. The authorities were stumped; their main suspect, a groundskeeper at the Tate house, was released after passing a polygraph test. Leno LaBianca, owner of a chain of supermarkets, and his wife Rosemary, who ran a successful clothing business, were murdered one night after the murders at the Tate house, on August 10, 1969.

Charles Manson and 27 members of his Family were arrested here in an early morning raid on August 16, 1969, but for charges related to stolen vehicles. Prior to housing the Family, the property had been a popular movie ranch and horse-riding spot. Another pre-Spahn-Ranch home base for the Manson Family.

Raided in October 1969, Manson's group was using this Death Valley ranch as a shelter after leaving Spahn. (Some members of the Family were also living at the nearby Myers Ranch.) He and 23 of his followers were arrested in what Helter Skelter describes as a three-day-long raid. (This raid was also largely related to stolen cars found on the property.) The ranch suffered a fire in the spring of 2009, but many of the stone structures are still standing, according to Atlas Obscura.

The one thing I was sad about was that our marinara sauce that came with our cheesy garlic bread was out-the-fridge cold. He returned home late that night to find Charles Manson in his house with about a dozen, mostly female guests. Manson and the guests stayed for a few months, at a cost of $100,000 to Wilson.

The following is an incomplete list of notable submarine sandwich restaurants. The one thing I was sad about was that our marinara sauce that came with our cheesy garlic bread was out-the-fridge cold. Other than that, this was the first cheese steak in a long time that had a generous amount of meat, and the flavor was great.

While Lockwood Internet Base is no more, you can still purchase the patch from SubmarineShop.com to show your support for museum submarines.

It is also here for all those who work and volunteer on the submarine museums to share ideas, talk about fund raising efforts, find restoration advice, promote special events, etc. SUBMARINEMUSEUMS.ORG forum member and amateur radio enthusiast Bill Chaikin (username "KA8VIT") was kind enough to share his videos of the USS Cod in Cleveland, OH. Visit KA8VIT's USS Cod Videos page to see some great video footage, even a 25 minute video tour of the entire boat! The videos will give you an idea of what all you can see by visiting a submarine museum. This is a list of submarines on display around the world separated by country.

The house is still standing but the house number has been changed. See List of ship replicas, List of shipwrecks and List of sunken nuclear submarines respectively. Clothes disposed of after the murders at Tate's house were found thrown off a hillside across from 2901 Benedict Canyon by a TV crew and a reporter from the LA Times attempting to trace the steps of the perpetrators on the night of the murders.

Neal built a fence to keep deer and visitors out. He is a private person, and only one interview with him has been published, by the Los Gatos Weekly. His wife, Linda Barton, and his son, Clayton Gilly, share his home, along with their pet donkey, Homer.

Wish I lived in Dayton so I could come here more often. Well maybe not because I'd probably weigh 100 pounds more. If I owned a restaurant, I'd want it to be like this. Many hold some various record, some were used in movies, and a few have rare operational, functioning equipment. All of them have a following of hard-working volunteers that keep them going.

house that jack built

The film finds von Trier wrestling with the claims of misogyny and misanthropy that have followed him his entire career, but not in the way you’d expect. If anything, he leans into both, daring you to look into the abyss with him as he interrogates his own dark side and banishes himself to the underworld. The Eames House, also known as case study #8, is mid-20th century modern architecture. The house was designed by the couple Ray and Charles Eames to serve as their home and studio.

In television and film

In 1963 the home became The Magic Castle, home to the Academy of Magical Arts. If you ever have the chance to step inside this spectacular place please do not hesitate to do so. The Derby House was designed by Lloyd Wright in 1926.

Popular movies coming soon

I am really looking forward to checking this one out in person in the future. The Chateau style home was built in 1909 by Rollin B. Lane. Ownership of the house remained with the Lane family until 1955.

Filming

There are so many incredible famous houses in Los Angeles. Some of the houses are famous because of the architecture while others are famous for being used in movies and tv shows. There are so many different ways that we are spoiled in Southern California but the incredible variety of homes that we can visit is truly something special. Please note that not all of the homes on this list are open to the public but I will make sure to specify which ones are available for you to visit vs which ones you can drive by. This is the man all tattered and tornThat kissed the maiden all forlornThat milked the cow with the crumpled hornThat tossed the dog that worried the catThat chased the rat that ate the cheeseThat lay in the house that Jack built.

The area is stunning and has great views of the city too. It is free to visit the grounds though occasionally the opportunity will become available to tour the inside for a fee. You can read about my visit here in my post on Greystone Mansion. Failed architect, engineer and vicious murderer Jack narrates the details of some of his most elaborately orchestrated crimes, each of them a towering piece of art that defines his life's work as a serial killer for twelve years.

In the first incident, Jack encounters an abrasive woman on a rural road who needs to fix her broken jack to repair a flat tire. She irritates Jack, saying he looks like a serial killer, insulting him, and then stating he is too much of a wimp to kill anyone. Offended, Jack bludgeons her with the tire jack and stores her body in an industrial freezer inside a factory building he purchased from a pizzeria. One of Frank Lloyd Wright's most important designs, it's built of textile blocks in the style of a Mayan temple. Initially a temporary structure designed by Lloyd Wright, the nested quarter-spheres form a fitting backdrop for the caliber of artists who perform on its stage. The Gamble House is just one among several houses in LA that are also museums you can visit.

Movies / TV

The hollyhock was Aline’s favorite flower and was used as a theme throughout the house. Even if you cannot tour the home it is visible from the park and the city views are wonderful as well. I recommend stopping by for at least a quick visit if you can. But there is an awful lot of boring talking, talking, talking, dialogue in American-English-Google-translated-from-Danish. Characterisation and narrative events that look improbable rather than mysterious or strange.

As ever, this is a pseudo-American Psycho, set in an America that looks heartsinkingly like the forests of Denmark or perhaps Germany, locations in which the appearance of American automobiles and American actors look almost surreally out of place. There is supposedly a place called “Carlson’s Supermarket” near one of these very remote chalets, and although we don’t see this store, we see its brown bag with its logo. I don’t think I have ever seen a more obviously faked artefact in a film in my life. After he marks red circles around her breasts with a marker, she becomes frightened and approaches a policeman, but he dismisses her and Jack as drunk. Jack later binds her before cutting off her breasts with a knife. He pins one of the breasts to the policeman's car and fashions the other into a wallet.

Self-guided walking tours of the exterior of Heritage Square Museum homes are currently available. You can enjoy the beauty of the homes and the gardens. I came here during the 2019 Museum of the Arroyo Day and really enjoyed it. The homes are beautiful and really take you back in time.

This is a film that stolidly withholds the horror-thrill that almost any other kind of serial killer film will give you – from The Silence of the Lambs, to Saw, or Seven, or Zodiac, or Kind Hearts and Coronets. And it doesn’t have the pure gonzo-grossout ecstasy of The Human Centipede, although I suspect that Von Trier may have had that in the back of his mind for its final victims. Partly designed by John and Donald B. Parkinson, it was the last great railway station to be built and not the grandest, but it's been in so many films that we all recognize it when we see it.

The Ennis House was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built in 1924. The house has 27,000 perforated and patterned decomposed granite blocks. The house consists of two buildings that are separated by a courtyard. You can see the house in a number of movies including Blade Runner. This is the house that Jack built. This is the cheese that lay in the house that Jack built. This is the rat that ate the cheeseThat lay in the house that Jack built. This is the cat that chased the ratThat ate the cheese that lay in the house that Jack built.

Built in 1911, this was the first mansion in Beverly Hills. The house looks beautiful but from the reviews that I have read, the gardens are truly what people love. Robinson’s department store when they started living in this mansion. I have not been able to confirm if the grounds are still open to the public during COVID 19. The Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills feels like the perfect home to kick off this list with. Visiting the grounds of this beautiful mansion is a favorite of both locals and tourists.

I was in awe of the living room and so badly wanted a picture. But the main thing I want to discuss is the violence. To be honest I mainly watched this just because I heard it’s very disturbing and I wanted to see how much of an exaggeration that was, especially after hearing it was censored by the MPAA. I was concerned with the length but it’s actually paced really well. I think the fact that it’s split into half hour chunks makes it a lot easier since it only really has to hold your attention for that long before it gets to build it back up again.

He keeps the corpses in a giant walk-in freezer, and delights in moving them around like, well, a director moves actors on a screen. And von Trier has been accused of misogyny on-screen and off, so it shouldn’t be surprising that Jack’s victims are mostly naïve women, although it's sometimes hard to watch. Jack’s crimes get more insanely violent and reprehensible, and nothing is off limits for von Trier. Jack murders a woman in her living room, guns down a family on a hunting trip, and in the film’s most misguided sequence, cuts off the breasts of a woman he has verbally berated and nicknamed “Simple” (Riley Keough). In fact, he’s constantly calling attention to his crimes, whether it’s the mechanic who saw him with his first victim or the guy he waves to on the porch of his second. Von Trier has claimed that there’s something of a Trump allegory at work in “Jack,” and it’s likely at least in part in how brazenly Jack commits his crimes.

You can find more of them in the Los Angeles House Museum Guide. Whether you are local to Los Angeles or are planning to visit this blog has been created with you in mind. I hope that by sharing my adventures I am able to help you discover new and exciting places in LA. This house was created by Frank Gehry for him and his family in 1978. He changed an existing house and turned it into something truly unique. The neighbors may not have been thrilled with what the home became but it looks like something really fun to see in person.

PCH is a really busy road so it won’t always feel easy to stop for the photo. His performance is very unsettling but also unique, which is hard to do with the thoughtful serial killer stereotype. Stories like this that delve into the mind of a killer are both very interesting and also one of the more disturbing things a horror movie can do for me. To story of “This Is the House That Jack Build” uses the cumulative tale technique, in which the events are progressively narrated leading to an end where the interlinking becomes obvious. Each sentence in the story is an example of an increasingly deeply nested relative clause.

The Sheats Goldstein Residence

The garage was used as Doc Brown’s house in Back to the Future and the living room shown above was used in Zathura. I have visited the house for free on two different occasions. You can visit it for free on the Museums of the Arroyo Day or during the City of Pasadena’s ArtNight.

The Jack House is now owned by the City of San Luis Obispo. Volunteer docents offer guided tours on Sundays from April through November, and the house is also open for holiday celebrations and special events. This is the only Neutra designed home that is available for tours.

Notorious for a Cannes response that included both a standing ovation and hundreds of walk-outs, “The House That Jack Built” is finally available to American audiences, in limited release and on VOD in a slightly-edited R-rated cut. The “thrust” of von Trier’s vision remains to such a degree that it’s even hard to believe this version got an R (which raises the key question of “why bother cutting it at all?” but that’s for another piece). It’s one that compares artistry with murder as the director draws direct lines between creating art and taking lives.

Top Posts

It was first built in 1932 for Neutra and his family. It is called the research house because it was built with a loan from a patron. A fire destroyed most of the house in 1963 and was rebuilt by Neutra’s son with the Dad’s oversight. This home and park have such a wonderful variety of activities for visitors. You can tour the home (during non-covid times), go horseback riding, hiking, attend movie nights over the summer, and polo games.

Most of all, like the serial killer who literally tells a cop about his crimes, von Trier just wants you to pay attention to him. Repulsed or fascinated—he doesn’t really care as long as you see him. In the fifth incident, Jack has detained six men in his freezer, intending to kill all of them with a single bullet. One of the men, an army veteran, informs Jack that he has the wrong ammunition. He goes to get the right ammunition from a friend, SP. SP phones the police, since they're looking for Jack, who then stabs SP through the throat.

Movie News & Guides

house that jack built

This was one of the first homes I ever toured in LA and fell in love with learning about the history of the unique homes in the area. You can read more about my visits to the Gamble House here. Cinema’s enfant terrible, Lars von Trier, is back with one of his most challenging and confrontational films in a career not exactly known for playing it safe.

Upcoming Drama movies

Jack has killed women, mainly women, and in a gloatingly sadistic manner – he has dismembered them and kept their body parts as souvenirs. But the most purely evil thing he has ever done is shown in flashback when Jack, as a boy, amputates the foot of a sweet yellow duckling with a pair of pliers, and then places the poor animal back in the water to watch it wobble round and round. This moment really did look absolutely, horribly real.

This is another home that is still on my to-visit list. So, is “The House That Jack Built” hollow provocation or dense commentary? It’s undeniably too long (153 minutes), often meandering through the same points over and over again in a way that becomes numbing, but there’s something more complex here than I think its critics are willing to see.

I visited the Hollyhock House in February of 2020 right before things got crazy with COVID-19. Thanks to a lecture series that was happening I was able to get visit this amazing home for free. Docents were placed throughout the home to offer insight but it was nice to get to walk around on our own. The biggest bummer is that you cannot take photography indoors.

Jack kills the responding officer and returns to his freezer. He unseals a second chamber inside, where he meets Verge, who has been observing Jack throughout his life. Verge reminds Jack that he never built the home he intended to, as he had made several attempts to build his perfect house between his murders.

In the freezer, he arranges the frozen corpses he has collected over the years into the shape of a house. As police break in, he enters his "house" and follows Verge into a hole in the floor, entering Hell. Jack, a failed architect from Washington State, recounts how he became a serial killer to Virgil—whom he refers to as Verge—as Verge leads Jack through the nine circles of Hell. Each of Jack's crimes, depicted through flashback, feature social commentary from Jack and Verge. Originally conceived as a television project by von Trier, The House That Jack Built began production in Sweden in 2016. The film debuted at the Cannes Film Festival, marking von Trier's return to the festival after more than six years.

Repositioning cruises 2022 & 2023

royal caribbean repositioning cruise

A repositioning cruise is an itinerary that repositions a ship from one homeport to another, and it's quite different from a regular cruise itinerary. These sailings typically feature a large number of sea days while traveling between continents. Set sail on an unforgettable journey with Celebrity Cruises in 2024 & 2025, as they offer a captivating lineup of repositioning cruises. Known for their exceptional service and luxurious accommodations, Celebrity Cruises has curated a diverse selection of voyages to cater to every traveler’s wanderlust. Whether you crave a peaceful retreat or an adventurous expedition, Celebrity Cruises has the perfect repositioning cruise for you. Transpacific and transatlantic cruises offer plenty of relaxing days at sea, plus exciting stops at idyllic, beach-filled islands and cities bustling with life and culture.

Allure Of The Seas

See the Cathedral of San Juan in Puerto Rico and the 14th-century Gothic Basilica of Santa Maria in Barcelona. Windstar Cruises' Wind Spirit, a masted sailing ship, is repositioning from Barbados to Lisbon, Portugal, on Feb. 22, 2025. However, you'll only want to book this voyage if you're interested in sailing vessels or you're not easily bored.

night Panama Canal on Coral Princess

If you've got room to splurge, you may want to consider a luxury line like Silversea or the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. From Sydney to either Honolulu or Seattle, be prepared to cross hemispheres and visit the best (and most beautiful) South Pacific islands. Immerse yourself in the historic architecture and cultural achievements on either side of the oceans. Prices for this voyage on Seven Seas Grandeur, which is an all-inclusive, all-suite vessel, start at $10,499 per person. Travelers who live near the embarkation or debarkation ports can save even more by only having to buy a one-way plane ticket rather than a full round trip. Boston is home to great sports, great food and loads of history with the Freedom Trail and Harvard.

What can I expect between consecutive cruises?

It's a good idea to have some type of seasickness remedy on hand, even if you're not typically sensitive to motion. The weather on a repo cruise depends on where and when you go, and always involves slightly more thoughtful packing. For example, a ship sailing from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean during fall will kick off with brisk weather but end in a warm, humid climate. Guests can often snag a good daily rate on the cruise, but the total fare could still be high -- in addition to potentially pricey one-way airfare. Be on the lookout for cruise deals that include airfare or shorter repo sailings, which offer even better value. Things start to warm up with a day on Madeira, followed by the volcanic island of Tenerife in the Canaries, then there’s eight days of total relaxation during the transatlantic crossing to Fort Lauderdale.

West Coast to Japan, or Australia or New Zealand, and the seasonal repositioning in reverse. For some passengers, spending days on end in the middle of nowhere -- particularly on ocean crossings -- is more maddening than relaxing. Though some ships spend the entire year sailing the same itineraries, many relocate to follow the sun. Likewise, in spring many ships, having spent winter in the Caribbean and South America, head back to Britain via the Azores, Canary Islands and Iberian Peninsula.

This means many days at sea, and ample opportunity to see and experience everything onboard. Moreover, it is a great way to get to know the crew members since your sailing is more than just a few days. The shortest you'll find is four or five days (for example, Southern California to Vancouver) and the longest is around 28 nights (yes, almost an entire month, usually between continents). Your origin and destination cities — or, in cruise-speak, embarkation and disembarkation ports — will not be the same. You might sail out of Florida and arrive in Barcelona or Southampton, England, allowing you to explore two continents on one vacation.

The sailing will visit Valencia, Malaga and Las Palmas in Spain, as well as Bermuda, before reaching Port Canaveral, near Orlando, which is the ship's seasonal home base in Florida. Not all of the cruise line or online travel agency booking pages have an option to check a box and search for repositioning cruises. If you can't find what you're looking for, do an online search for the term and the cruise line you wish to sail. Even better, call a travel agent or the cruise line's booking staff directly, and they can help you find the repositioning cruise that's best for you. An advantage of repositionings is the price, which is often cheaper than what you'd pay for a round-trip sailing of the same length or which has more port days built into the schedule.

These cruises are typically offered during the spring and fall, when cruise lines reposition their ships to different parts of the world to take advantage of the changing seasons and travel patterns. Repositioning cruises are known for having a greater-than-average number of days spent at sea, but it's not as if you never get off the ship. On a transatlantic sailing, port stops could be in Spain's Canary Islands or Portugal's Azores islands. A repositioning cruise from Southern California to Vancouver before the Alaska cruise season might sail up the Pacific Coast and visit cities like San Francisco and Astoria, Oregon. In order to get from one region to another, repositioning cruises tend to be significantly longer sailings, with lots of sea days inbetween. While all these extra days means more time to experience what is available onboard, many cruisers are concerned about the cruise getting dull or even boring.

These voyages offer travelers the chance to embark on unforgettable journeys across the seas, exploring new destinations and cultures along the way. With Viking Ocean Cruises, passengers can expect unparalleled comfort, luxury, and service from start to finish. Whether it is traversing the tranquil waters of the Mediterranean or crossing the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, Viking Ocean Cruises ensures a seamless and enriching experience for all passengers.

Carnival Cruise Line, in particular, has taken this evolution to heart, revolutionizing its drink offerings with a tailored menu for almost every bar on their ships. This accomplishment is noteworthy, especially when considering that a single ship can host between 10 and 15 bars. Carnival has been rolling out faster Wi-Fi systems across its fleet in the last couple of years, such that you can now stream video on some ships. Pricing changes over time, but the fastest "premium" service on Carnival vessels was recently priced at $21.25 per day when bought in advance ($25 per day when bought onboard).

So perhaps it makes sense that it has one of the most extensive children's programs at sea. The new Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration each have 180 suites — more than twice the number of Carnival's other recent ships. There's almost always a piano bar that's home to lively singalongs. When it comes to raucous, though, nothing on Carnival ships quite compares to the frequent karaoke nights on board. Sometimes held in a secondary lounge or a shipboard pub, karaoke on Carnival draws a big crowd. Passengers come prepared with rehearsed songs and sometimes even their own guitars.

Open on the Lido Deck until midnight, the Swirls station serves up frozen yogurt and soft serve ice cream in the classic flavors of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, or you can enjoy your own combo swirl.
